Adele's '21' becomes first million-selling album on iTunes in Europe

Adele's album '21' has become the first LP to sell a million copies on iTunes in Europe. The singer's second LP has broken Apple's European download record, reports The Telegraph, despite only being released eleven months ago.



Earlier this year, '21' also became the biggest selling digital album in US history, after it overtook the previous record-holder, Eminem's LP 'Recovery'.


Figures suggested that digital sales have counted for almost half of the record's sales in the US, with a total of 2.6 million copies shifted in total.


In July, meanwhile, her hit 'Someone Like You' became the first single to sell over a million copies in the UK. It spent four weeks at the top spot in February and became one of only 16 singles to hit one million sales since 2000.


Independent music analyst Mark Mulligan said the singer's latest feat was a "great landmark for digital album sales" but warned that downloading was "getting rarer".


"This is a positive news for the music industry and Apple's iTunes has done a great job of helping to sell digital albums," he said. "However, mass buying of digital albums is swimming against the tide and is getting rarer.


"Most people now like consuming music as singles and a growing number either stream songs or watch the videos on YouTube. Fewer and fewer people download entire albums to own.


"Downloading albums to own is becoming a less and less important part of how fans and artists interact," he added.

TheDivaJuice: Quite true though. Recently, I just bother to bought three Adele songs on iTunes, which is, Rolling in the Deep, Someone Like You and Set Fire To the Rain. Not sure of getting the WHOLE album...ermmmm maybe I'm for the next great song before make my decision to purchase the whole album..
