Madonna Crowned 'Greatest' Woman In Music
Who is the greatest woman in music?
Not long after Madonna's highly-theatrical performance at Super Bowl XLVI, that spectacle seems to have helped push Madge to the top of VH1's latest list, "100 Greatest Women in Music."
Mariah Carey and Beyonce ranked #2 and #3, respectively.
The list only includes women who have released hits in about the last 20 years -- since 1990. That means VH1 can skip Aretha Franklin (though she did have a hot video in 1997 for "A Rose is Still A Rose").
The channel also heavily leans toward promoting pop stars, not female rockers. The list somehow grants Katy Perry (#17) more acclaim than Sheryl Crow, who doesn't make the top 20. Kelly Clarkson (#19) beats out Lauryn Hill or the Dixie Chicks. In fact, other than #14 Alicia Keys, there isn't a woman in the top 20 who popularized herself playing an instrument.
So The Greatest Woman in Music title might be an empty honor for Madge. But we're sure she's satisfied (and maybe even a bit relieved) to read that Lady Gaga was still at #4 ...
